Leroy Maxwell Jr.

Leroy Maxwell Jr. focuses his legal practice on appellate litigation, civil rights, and criminal defense. Throughout his career, he has achieved significant results for his clients, including recovering over $25 million in personal injury and civil rights cases and contributing to the dismissal of more than 1,000 criminal charges.

Before founding Maxwell + Tillman, Leroy served as a senior civil litigator and criminal defense trial attorney at one of Birmingham’s leading law firms. He also worked as a Fellow with the Equal Justice Initiative (EJI) in Montgomery, Alabama, where he supported appellate litigation efforts and contributed to initiatives addressing unfair criminal justice practices through litigation, advocacy, education, and policy reform.

Leroy has also played a key role in landmark United States Supreme Court decisions, including Jackson v. Hobbs and Miller v. Alabama.

He has extensive experience practicing in both state and federal courts across Alabama and beyond. Leroy earned his undergraduate degree from Purdue University and his Juris Doctor from Valparaiso University School of Law. Outside of his legal work, he enjoys following Alabama football and spending time with his family.
