Thomas J. Butters

Mr. Butters is an experienced trial attorney who represents individuals and businesses in criminal investigations, trials, appeals, civil litigation, and arbitration proceedings. His criminal defense practice includes tax fraud, healthcare fraud, bank fraud, business fraud, export fraud, wage and hour cases, drug trafficking, racketeering, gambling, and murder. In civil matters, he has represented businesses of various sizes, including developers, travel companies, and construction companies, in state and federal courts and arbitration proceedings involving securities laws, construction, travel, and other business disputes. He has also represented legal professionals in disciplinary matters.

Mr. Butters has tried hundreds of criminal and civil trials and arbitrations and has handled cases in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont, Maine, Montana, California, Florida, Ohio, Iowa, and Kentucky. He has argued cases before the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court, Massachusetts Appeals Court, and the First and Sixth Circuit Courts of Appeals. His professional experience includes serving as an Assistant District Attorney in Suffolk County, Massachusetts, working in the Drug Unit, White Collar, and Homicide divisions, and holding partnership positions at several law firms. He has served as Partner Emeritus at Butters Brazilian LLP since 1997. Recognized as a Massachusetts Super Lawyer from 2004 onward and rated AV-Preeminent by Martindale-Hubbell, he earned his B.S. from Butler University and his J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center. Outside his legal practice, he enjoys fly fishing.
