In the 1993 movie, Philadelphia, attorney Joe Miller, played by Denzel Washington, stops questioning an Attorney witness and simply states, “Now, explain it to me like I’m a four-year-old.” Throughout the movie, Mr. Miller continuously asks Attorney witnesses to explain or repeat things back to him that a 4, 6, or 8-year-old might understand. You may read this and think it sounds demeaning. It’s not and in fact, is quite the opposite. People may hear what is being said, but interpret it differently, or maybe they don’t understand and are too proud or self-conscious to ask questions. In order to get clarity on a topic, things need to be explained in simple terms, and the law is anything but simple.
